A Midsemester Night’s Dream: Zombies and Monsters

“I have had a most rare vision. I have had a dream, past the wit of man to say what dream it was.”

As they enter the woods outside of Athens, the characters of A Midsummer Night’s Dream begin to experience events so strange that they become unsure of what is reality and what is merely dreaming, and the experience has long-lasting effects on them even after they leave the forest.

As we prepare for our upcoming production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, we asked members of the Villanova Theatre community to share some of their dreams — and found that many of the responses were ghoulishly haunting. We’ve assembled the spookiest here for your enjoyment — just don’t blame us if you dream of something hiding under your bed tonight.

I had a dream once about the zombie apocalypse where the zombies couldn’t walk upstairs, so you were safe if you were on the second floor of a building. As a result, humanity ignored the issue and just adapted to living out of solely two-story or higher buildings. This meant that you still had to go to work while there were zombies actively prowling the street. Dream Kirsten felt like the only one who noticed an issue with people potentially getting eaten on their way to work.

In the dream, I was stage managing a production of The Diary of Anne Frank, but the only way to get any of the cast, crew, and audience members into the theater was by sneaking them in through the ceiling. (I realized upon waking up the parallels there.) A fun fact about zombieism in this dream world was that it was an airborne virus, so even though you could be safe from zombies by being upstairs, it could still pass through the air and suddenly zombies would be on the second floor and chaos would ensue. That meant I had to come up with a zombie contingency plan in case any of my cast or audience members caught the zombie virus and I had to evacuate the building.

I woke up just as a zombie riot started in the audience.

My stress dream always has been being chased by dinosaurs… until I started watching The Walking Dead. Then zombies replaced T-Rexes and honestly I don’t know which one is better.

So I have weird, vivid, really long dreams.

I had a dream I was a detective that was kidnapped by cartoons because Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and some other non-Looney Tunes had gone missing. And they were monster sightings every night! I remember going to the ‘scary’ part of town where forgotten cartoons lived and I interviewed the dragons from Dragon Tales, Top Cat, and two old versions of the Scooby Doo gang (who all lived together in one apartment). I was staying on Sylvester’s couch at his farm and using his home computer when I found articles about an accident when Bugs was in high-school in which he was bullying a student in chemistry, He poured a liquid on him that turned that poor cartoon into a yellow blob monster. Yikes! Well, that kid disappeared and when I started looking at pictures in current newspapers, it was the same monster! Sylvester came running and told me that we were surrounded by mummies, vampires, and Frankensteins. We tried to run but the blob monster got to Sylvester and turned him into a vampire by touching him. But they were all there, all of the missing people. Bugs was a vampire now and the blob monster wanted revenge on all those that bullied him. But I woke up to my alarm before I could finish the dream…that’s definitely has to be the most specific and oddest dream I’ve had.

I also had a dream last year where a little old lady had four cats: a black and white one, a fat tabby with a missing eye, a grey striped cat that was really long and thin, and a white cat with big green eyes. Someone came to her house looking for a witch that supposedly had lived there and they wanted the Four Horseman if the Apocalypse back. He apparently missed the very obvious four cats hanging out in the living room but when the guy drove off, the black and white cat moved to her and sat in front of her. She waved her hand and suddenly he was a man. The cat/man simply stated that they needed to move soon and she waved her hand and everything she owned flew into a carpetbag and they left in her car. That was the entire dream….
